    Metformin heart problems

A new analysis of 204 studies involving more than 1.4 million people suggests that metformin, the most frequently prescribed stand-alone drug for type 2 diabetes, reduces the relative risk of a patient dying from heart disease by about 30 to 40 percent compared to its closest competitor drug, sulfonylurea. S., assistant professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The study, designed to assess the comparative — not absolute or individual — benefits and risks of more than a dozen FDA-approved drugs for lowering blood sugar in type 2 diabetes, is described in the April 19 issue of the “Metformin looks like a clear winner,” says Nisa Maruthur, M. “This is likely the biggest bit of evidence to guide treatment of type 2 diabetes for the next two to three years.” Maruthur, the lead author on the meta-analysis, notes that cardiovascular fatalities — heart attacks and strokes — are major risks for people with uncontrolled blood sugar, but it has never been clear if one diabetes drug is better than another at lowering these fatalities. Other diabetes-related complications include blindness, kidney failure and limb amputations. This review, Maruthur says, provides a much-needed update to two previous analyses, the last one published in 2011. Since then, researchers have published more than 100 new studies comparing the effectiveness of various blood sugar-lowering drugs, and several new drugs have also come on the market since the last report. Of the total 204 studies analyzed, 50 spanned several continents, while others were conducted across Europe, Asia and the United States. Most of the studies were short term, with only 22 mostly observational studies lasting more than two years. Hi Yall, I have diabetes type 2 and I have been on metformin for several years now. It is reported that older individuals with type 2 who take sulfonylureas may have a higher risk of developing heart problems that individuals taking metformin. More recently I have read that metformin could cause heart problems. I would like to know if there is any truth to this. A two year study of over 8,000 individuals with type 2 who were 65 and older, 12.4 percent who started with sulfonylurea had a heart attack or other heart complications compared with 10.4 percent of those who started with metformin. Hopefully there is no truth to this and if so would put my mind at ease. Moreover, individuals taking sulfonylurea experienced heart issues sooner after starting therapy than individuals taking metformin. Fu, Ph D, an associate faculty member in the department of quantitative health sciences at the Cleveland Clinic, "The findings are important because older patients with diabetes are at particular risk for cardiovascular disease, and sulfonylureas continue to remain a commonly used medication in this population”. It seems like there are so many side effects from just about everything including some of the foods we eat. Fu notes, Sulfonylurea drugs, which include chlorpropamide glyburide, glipizide, tolazamide, and tolbutamide, are often one of the first medications prescribed to lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Metformin inhibits sugar production by the liver whereas sulfonylureas increase the production of insulin. Studies have demonstrated that sulfonylureas are linked to hypoglycemia and weight gain as well as to heart complications. So being older puts you at a greater risk of heart complications but overly the percentage rate is relatively low.

Section of Endocrinology, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut If a benefit from metformin therapy in heart failure does exist, then. In any case, the short term analysis by the French investigators still showed that metformin did not lower the risk of heart attacks, leg amputations. Hi Yall, I have diabetes type 2 and I have been on metformin for several years now. More recently I have read that metformin could cause heart problems. Gee, that's.

The manufacturer's product labeling should always be consulted for a list of side effects most frequently appearing in patients during clinical studies. Talk to your doctor about which medications may be most appropriate for you. Metformin (brand name: Glucophage, Glumetza) is a medication used primarily for diabetes. It lowers blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics by facilitating the entrance of glucose in the tissues and reducing the amount made by the liver. Just wondering how many of you ladies (who are pregnant with twins) conceived twins while using Clomid? I read that even though Clomid may produce more than one egg to be released, the chances of conceiving twins is not that high. Just curious to know the "actual" stats of the ingender ladies with twins. I had 3 cycles of Clomid and only produced one egg each time. Eggs must've been good as I've got two Clomid babies though. I asked my fertility doc this question and he had just delivered Clomid twins that morning! He did say though that chances of conceiving twins in a normal natural cycle is about 4% and with Clomid it raises it to about 5-10% so not too much difference (well, I guess that depends on whether you were the one who got the twins.. ) I took Clomid for my MS/IUI, had three mature follicles, and got pregnant with one baby. I have a good friend who took Clomid to help her ovulate and now has two-year-old twins. She quotes the chances as 9% for twins and 1% for more than twins when taking Clomid.
