It prohibits the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme found in the liver. In the United States, disulfiram is sold under brand name Antabuse. Disulfiram is used as a conditioning treatment for alcohol dependence. When taken with alcohol, disulfiram causes many unwanted and unpleasant effects, and the fear of these is meant to condition the patient to avoid alcohol. Two Danish physicians who were investigating disulfiram for its potential benefits to destroy parasitic worms took disulfiram and became sick at a cocktail party. After a series of pharmacological and clinical studies, it was determined that disulfiram interacts with alcohol. If taken with alcohol, however, it alters certain steps in the breakdown of alcohol. When alcohol is ingested, it is converted first to a chemical called acetaldehyde. In order for acetaldehyde to be broken down into acetate, aldehyde dehydrogenase needs to be active. Since disulfiram blocks the activity of aldehyde dehydrogenase, acetaldehyde cannot be broken down and the levels of acetaldehyde become five to ten times higher than the normal levels. This medication should not be given to a patient without their knowledge. Do not take this medication if you are under the influence of alcohol or have drunk alcohol in the last 12 hours. Show More This medication is used along with counseling and support to treat alcoholism. Disulfiram works by blocking the processing of alcohol in the body. This causes you to have a bad reaction when you drink alcohol. Take this medication by mouth with or without food, usually once daily in the morning or as directed by your doctor. If this medication causes drowsiness, take it at bedtime. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. The maximum recommended daily dose is 500 milligrams.

Clomid is the most commonly-prescribed fertility drug. Clomid helps women who ovulate irregularly or not at all. Still, as with any medication, Clomid can cause uncomfortable side effects. Clomid causes the pituitary gland to secrete more FSH, which starts the development of ovarian follicles containing eggs. If Clomid works for you, eggs are released from the ovary and ovulation occurs. Clomid success rates are high as the drugs helps to induce ovulation in more than 80 percent of patients who take Clomid. Also, about 50 percent of women become pregnant within six cycles of taking Clomid. Some women report severe side effects on Clomid, but many women tolerate Clomid side effects well. Clomid side effects can even be fairly mild and generally disappear once Clomid is stopped. With higher doses of this fertility drug, Clomid side effects are more pronounced. Erectile dysfunction is simply the inability to maintain an erection long enough to have sex. Formerly referred to as impotence, erectile dysfunction is a serious problem, affecting more than 80 million men worldwide. While it may be uncomfortable for a man to discuss sexual problems with his doctor, many times erectile dysfunction is a symptom of a more serious health problem, and it should be brought to a physician's attention. While there are several popular drugs on the market to treat erectile dysfunction, a few dietary changes may also have a similar effect. Pomegranate appears to have several beneficial elements related to sexual performance, including increased sperm amounts and improved erections. A study that appeared in the April 2007 issue of International Journal of Impotence Research showed that 47 percent of the men who consumed pomegranate juice over 2 four-week periods with a two-week interruption in between reported improved erections. Researchers from the University of California, Los Angeles, and The Male Clinic in Beverly Hills, Calif., attributed the improvement to the antioxidant properties of pomegranate, which help with blood circulation.
