Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a type of talking therapy that's increasingly being used in the treatment of depression. Most experts recommend that people with moderate to severe depression are treated with a combination of CBT and antidepressants. However, if you're unable or unwilling to take antidepressants, you have the option of receiving CBT on its own. CBT helps you understand your thoughts and behaviour, and how they affect you. It helps you recognise that events in your past may have shaped you, but it concentrates mostly on how you can change the way you think, feel and behave in the present. It also teaches you how to overcome negative thoughts. CBT is usually available on the NHS, although the waiting lists are usually long. The study - conducted in nonhuman primates with brain structures and functions similar to those of humans - found that the antidepressant sertraline, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) marketed as Zoloft, significantly increased the volume of one brain region in depressed subjects but decreased the volume of two brain areas in non-depressed subjects. "These observations are important for human health because Zoloft is widely prescribed for a number of disorders other than depression," said Carol A. D., professor of pathology-comparative medicine at Wake Forest Baptist and lead author of the study, published in the current online issue of the journal Neuropharmacology. In the study, 41 middle-aged female monkeys were fed a diet formulated to replicate that consumed by many Americans for 18 months, during which time depressive behavior in the animals was recorded. Female monkeys were chosen for this study because depression is nearly twice as common in women as men and the use of antidepressants is most common in women ages 40 to 59. After the 18-month pre-study phase, the monkeys were divided into two groups balanced for body weight, body mass index and depressive behavior. For the next 18 months, 21 monkeys received sertraline in daily doses comparable to those taken by humans while a group of 20 received a placebo. This treatment regimen is analogous to a human taking an antidepressant for approximately five years.

The severity of sexual side effects depends on the individual and the specific type and dose of antidepressant. For some people, sexual side effects are minor or may ease up as their bodies adjust to the medication. For others, sexual side effects continue to be a problem. Antidepressants with the lowest rate of sexual side effects include: Stopping medication because of sexual side effects is a common problem, and for most people this means depression returns. If you're pregnant or trying to become pregnant, tell your doctor, as this may affect the type of antidepressant that's appropriate. Everyone reacts differently to antidepressants, so it may take some trial and error to identify what works best for you. In the past few decades, the use of prescription antidepressants has gone up an alarming 400 percent. Currently, one in ten Americans are taking one of these medications. It’s not known for sure whether the problem is that more people are depressed or that these drugs are being overmarketed by drug companies and overprescribed by doctors, but what is clear is that antidepressant use has gotten out of control. The most popular antidepressants are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. This group includes some of the most popular prescription drugs on the planet such as Zoloft, Prozac, Celexa, Lexapro, and Paxil. The rationale for their use is based on the serotonin theory of depression — that depression is caused by low serotonin levels. Serotonin is a major neurotransmitter that’s a major factor in the quality of overall happiness and mood as well as libido, sleep, memory, and learning.

Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) can be caused by a number of medications, including some antidepressants. If your antidepressant is the cause of your tinnitus, switching to another medication may solve the problem, but don't quit taking your medication without medical guidance. Antidepressants are a less common cause of tinnitus than are other types of medications — such as aspirin, anti-inflammatories or some antibiotics — or underlying health conditions. Causes of tinnitus include prolonged exposure to noise, blood vessel disorders, diabetes, allergies and other medical, neurological or mental health problems. While caffeine has traditionally been thought to be associated with tinnitus, some research has found higher amounts of caffeine to be associated with a lower risk of tinnitus in some people. Tinnitus also can be caused by age-related hearing loss or a buildup of wax in the ear. You'll need to work with your doctor to determine whether your antidepressant or something else is causing your tinnitus. Your symptoms may go away when the underlying cause is treated.
