Most people who think they are allergic to penicillin in fact are not, researchers said Friday. It’s something doctors have suspected for a long time, but the researchers say they were surprised by just how many people weren’t allergic to the antibiotic: it was 94 percent of them. Thanai Pongdee, an allergist at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida and colleagues tested 384 people who said they were allergic to penicillin. Tests showed 94 percent of them were in fact, not allergic.“These patients were scheduled to undergo orthopedic, general surgery, neurosurgery--any type of surgery you can think of,” Pongdee told NBC News. “We probably expected a little over half of people would not be allergic based on the time frame when they were initially determined to be allergic, but it ended up being a much higher proportion than that.”It’s good news for the patients, who can get cheaper, more generic penicillin-based drugs such as amoxicillin or related drugs called cephalosporins. These antibiotics generally cause fewer side-effects than other antibiotics, and they allow doctors to save the other drugs for penicillin-resistant infections.“There are two issues: these patients are put on other antibiotics which be less effective and potentially have more side-effects,” said Dr. James Sublett, a family allergist in Louisville, Kentucky who is incoming president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI).“The other is cost. A very commonly used substitute, for example Levaquin, is seven to eight times more expensive for a 10-day course than a similar course of generic Augmentin, a penicillin drug.”“A patient will say, ‘My mom told me when I was 3 years old (that) I had a reaction to penicillin. If you have ever been prescribed antibiotics for a bacterial infection, you have probably been given amoxicillin or Augmentin (amoxicillin clavulanate) at one time or another. If your child has ever needed antibiotics, both may have been prescribed. Amoxicillin is often the first antibiotic prescribed for common infections like ear infections and strep throat. It is typically used in young children because it is effective against many common childhood bacterial infections and doesn't have many severe side effects. By adding a beta-lactamase blocker to amoxicillin, Augmentin is able to overcome resistance to harder-to-treat bacteria, broadening the spectrum of infections it can treat. It is for this reason that Augmentin is referred to as a broad-spectrum antibiotic. If you have an infection and don't necessarily know which bacteria is causing it, it may seem to make sense to use an antibiotic that would kill the most bugs. Another, even more pressing concern is that using broad spectrum antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance. Among people with a convincing history of penicillin allergy, only about 20. ampicillin, amoxicillin, carbenicillin, ticarcillin, and piperacillin. Amoxil amoxicillin is a good and cheap antibiotic that comes in different forms to treat many types of bacterial infections. Penicillin VK penicillin is good at treating strep throat and is cheap, however, it can only be used for certain infections as many bacteria have developed resistance to it. You are allergic to penicillin it does not mean you are necessarily. antibiotic that is distantly related to penicillin. Co-amoxiclav amoxicillin plus clavulanic. Amoxicillin and penicillin are two of many antibiotics on the market today. They’re actually in the same family of antibiotics, called the penicillin family. This family contains antibiotics that come from a fungus called Other examples include the antibiotics ampicillin and nafcillin. Drugs in this family work in similar ways to treat infections, but there are small differences in the kinds of bacteria each drug fights and the side effects each drug causes. So while amoxicillin and penicillin are different, they’re similar in many ways. As antibiotics, both can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria. They work by stopping the bacteria from multiplying. Penicillin is perhaps the most well-known member of a group of antibiotics called beta-lactams, which refers to a particular structure in their chemical makeup. The structure is also shared by semi-synthetic Penicillins and cephalosporins are also the most common causes of drug allergy. About 10 percent of Americans report having an allergy to penicillin or a related antibiotic. While penicillin allergy most commonly occurs in young adults, reactions can occur at any age. Approximately 300 deaths can be attributed to penicillin allergy each year in the United States. Symptoms of an allergic reaction to penicillin may include anaphylaxis, hives, below-the-skin swelling, asthma symptoms, as well as non-allergic symptoms such as serum sickness, certain forms of anemia, and other drug rashes. While many people report having an allergy to penicillin, less than 10 percent of these actually have a true allergy to the drug. Some patients that have been labeled as "penicillin allergic" may in fact have experienced non-allergic reactions or side effects to the agent, such as gastrointestinal upset, headache, or nausea, and mistaken it for a true allergy. Antibiotics and alcohol can cause similar side effects, such as stomach upset, dizziness and drowsiness. Combining antibiotics and alcohol can increase these side effects.
