    Lasix and electrolytes

Athletes have been swigging electrolyte replenishers since 1965. Water and electrolytes are essential to your health. That was the year a Florida Gators coach asked doctors why his players were wilting so quickly in the heat. At birth, your body is about 75 to 80 percent water. So, what are electrolytes and why are they important? By the time you’re an adult, the percentage of water in your body drops to approximately 60 percent if you’re male and 55 percent if you’re female. The volume of water in your body will continue to decrease as you age. Fluid in your body contains things such as cells, proteins, glucose, and electrolytes. Electrolytes come from the food and liquids you consume. Electrolytes are certain nutrients (or chemicals) present in your body that have many important functions — from regulating your heartbeat to allowing your muscles to contract so you can move. The major electrolytes found within the body include calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, phosphate and chloride. Because these crucial nutrients help stimulate nerves throughout the body and balance fluid levels, an electrolyte imbalance can cause a variety of serious negative symptoms, including some that are potentially deadly. You obtain electrolytes through eating different foods and drinking certain fluids, while you lose them partially through exercise, sweating, going to the bathroom and urinating. (1) This is why a poor diet, too little or too much exercise, and being sick are some possible causes for an electrolyte imbalance. Some of the major roles that electrolytes have within the body include: Electrolytes are found within bodily fluids, including urine, blood and sweat. Electrolytes are given their name because they literally have an “electric charge.” (2) They separate into positively and negatively charged ions when they’re dissolved in water.

Lasix Furosemide belongs to the class of medications called diuretics. levels of electrolytes such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, and calcium. Failure or renal disease, potassium should be monitored shortly after the initiation of a diuretic because of potentially more rapid electrolyte and fluid shifts. Hyponatremia is an electrolyte imbalance and is indicated by a low level of sodium in. A common example of this type of medication is Furosemide e.g Lasix.

Lasix -- or furosemide -- is a type of loop diuretic prescription drug used to treat many conditions such as high blood pressure, fluid retention, kidney or liver disease, or other medical conditions. When taking Lasix, it is important to be aware of special dietary considerations to prevent side effects and excessive weight loss and to promote stable electrolytes. Lasix causes the kidneys to excrete additional fluid and salt from the body through urine. This medication comes in either a tablet or liquid form and should be taken by mouth exactly as prescribed by your physician. Lasix is intended to control -- not cure -- high blood pressure, so continue using it unless your doctor recommends otherwise. Always inform your doctor of other prescription and nonprescription drugs you are taking before starting Lasix. Lasix should be taken on an empty stomach to improve absorption and effectiveness. Electrolytes are minerals that are essential to a healthy body. They are positively or negatively charged molecules that your body uses for muscular contraction, maintaining the amount of water in your body and the p H of your blood. That's the science behind many sports drinks -- to replace electrolytes lost through exercise. However, electrolyte levels can be maintained by including fruits and vegetables that are high in electrolytes in your diet. Potassium lowers high blood pressure, lowers the risk of stroke and regulates hearts function. Potassium works with sodium in muscle contraction through the sodium-potassium pump. Fruits high in potassium are: bananas, oranges, kiwi, avocado, tamarind, peaches and nectarines. Many dried fruit are high in potassium, including dried apricots, dried apples, prunes, raisins and dried figs.

[Posted 12/20/2018]AUDIENCE: Health Professional, Infectious Disease, Cardiology, Patient ISSUE: FDA review found that fluoroquinolone antibiotics can increase the occurrence of rare but serious events of ruptures or tears in the main artery of the body, called the aorta. These tears, called aortic dissections, or ruptures of an aortic aneurysm can lead to dangerous bleeding or even death. They can occur with fluoroquinolones for systemic use given by mouth or through an injection. BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are approved to treat certain bacterial infections and have been used for more than 30 years. They work by killing or stopping the growth of bacteria that can cause illness. Without treatment, some infections can spread and lead to serious health problems (see List of Currently Available FDA-Approved Systemic Fluoroquinolones, available at RECOMMENDATION: Healthcare professionals should: Taking levofloxacin increases the risk that you will develop tendinitis (swelling of a fibrous tissue that connects a bone to a muscle) or have a tendon rupture (tearing of a fibrous tissue that connects a bone to a muscle) during your treatment or for up to several months afterward. I'm 16 weeks and I'm suffering from a horrible yeast infection. I was also tested with cultures for bacterial vaginitis and for trichomonas. When I do a search on Internet, it seems Diflucan is meant for women. I was wanting to know your thoughts or if any of you have used this ?? I had two yeast infections while pregnant with my son. I was tested for all stds except for HPV, which I had a pap smear in June 2007 which was normal. Beside giving her medicine, her gynae also asks me to take one 150mg tablet of Diflucan. She gave me a prescription for one tablet of Diflucan, when I was picking up my prescription, the pharmacy techs said its not recommended during pregnancy, mainly first trimester, but they gave me the pill and I haven't taken it yet. I was more comfortable with the pill form because I really didn't want to insert anything vaginally. I am 7 months pregnant and almost all pregnancy I have yellow discharge, sometimes is itching. Hello Doctor, Thank you for taking the time to review my post. Two months ago I started to have vaginal redness and irritation with some whitish discharge and some on ond off buring with urination. when i called my ob for a prescription for diflucan, they said i could not take it if i was breastfeeding. d for thinking i had an infection, she told me to get some) and use it on days when I am itchy. But the other times I had to use a prescribed cream. however, after i had my son and got my period for the first time, the yeast infections were back. My Dr had told me some women get them often or sometimes even for the first time while pregnant (change in hormones and everthing else going on down there) Your Dr will probably want to see you, I know when I had them I was given Diflucan (once I think) and was able to use the Monistat only as a itch reliever for the outside of the vagina (no insertion). fortunately for me, i never had a yeat infection while i was pregnant, so i didn't have to worry about it. After I came to know about my pregnancy, I am now scared, that I might have harmed my baby. Now I am getting nervous...should I have done this?? Has anyone ever taken diflucan when they were pregnant? i always took diflucan for yeat infections before i got pregnant. Hi All- I didn't know I was pregnant when I took 2x150 mg of fluconazole in a span of week during my 4th and 5th weeks. I am now very worry about it and thinking if I should let go the baby. I know you are not supposed to take Diflucan when you are pregnant, but I didn't think it was that big of a deal because I don't know if I am pregnant for sure..if so I would have only been 6 days....
